Small business websites that turn visitors into customers

What a small business website needs to do

A small business website has one job: get the right people to contact you. Everything else, the design, the pages, the words, the speed, is there to make that happen more often.

Most small business websites fail quietly. They look fine, they're online, and nobody ever calls from them. That's usually because they were built to describe the business rather than to be found and to persuade. The difference is in the structure and the words, not the design.

Be found for what you do, where you do it

A plumber in Tiverton needs to show up when someone searches "plumber Tiverton", and that takes a page about plumbing that mentions Tiverton, not a homepage that mentions everything once. We give each service and each area its own page, written around what people type.

Answer the questions people arrive with

How much, how soon, do you cover my area, can I trust you. Every page answers those where it can, with the phone number and a form in sight. Google and AI tools pick up on pages that answer questions, and so do customers.

Work on a phone

Most local searches happen on a phone, often in a van or at the kitchen table. The site is designed for that screen first, and it loads fast on a poor signal.

Be easy for you to keep right

You can edit the basics yourself in a few minutes, and the support time on your monthly plan covers the rest.

Who this is for

If any of these sound familiar, a new site will pay for itself.

You're starting out and need a proper web presence

A site that looks established from day one, explains what you do and gives people a reason to call you rather than the next name on the list.

Your work comes from word of mouth and you want more

Referrals are great, but people still check you out online before they call. A clear, trustworthy site turns those checks into enquiries.

You've got a DIY site that isn't bringing anything in

Site builders are fine for getting something up, but they rarely rank. We rebuild it around what your customers search for.

You've outgrown a one-page site

More services, more areas, more to say. A proper structure with a page for each service gives Google and your customers something to find.

What's in every small business website

No bolt-ons for the basics. These are the things a site needs to actually work for a business, so they're in every build.

  • Designed for phones first, then desktop
  • A page for each service, written around what people search for
  • Your towns and areas covered, set up for local SEO
  • Structured data so Google and AI tools understand who you are
  • Fast, secure hosting with SSL
  • Enquiry forms that land straight in your inbox
  • Google Business Profile and analytics connected
  • A walkthrough so you can make small edits yourself
  • Hosting, backups and support time on one monthly plan

How a new website comes together

Four steps, no jargon, and you know exactly where you stand at each one.

Step 1

Discovery call

A free, no-pressure chat about your business, your customers and what the site needs to do. At your place or on Zoom.

Step 2

Plan and quote

A page plan built around what people search for, with a fixed price in writing.

Step 3

Design and build

You see the design before we build it, and the site before it goes live. Feedback at each stage, nothing hidden.

Step 4

Launch and look after

We launch it, connect Google, and show you how to make small changes. Hosting, backups and support time then run on a simple monthly plan.

DC Plumbing and Heating: a small business website built to turn searches into calls

A family-run plumbing and heating firm in Chard covering Somerset, Devon and Dorset. The new site puts the phone number and a quote form on every page, has a page for each service, and names the areas they cover so it shows up for local searches.

Peter at MidDevon Digital has been absolutely amazing. His patience with my lack of technology is sound and I love the work he has done on our website. I would have no hesitation recommending him.

Pam Rawlings, P2HR, Bristol

Peter created a website for my business and I could not be happier with the outcome. Nothing was ever a problem when I wanted to change things and it was done in a timely manner.

Small business website questions

How much does a small business website cost?

It depends on the number of pages, whether you need features like booking or online payments, and who writes the content. After a short discovery call you get a fixed quote in writing, so you know the full cost before any work starts. Our website cost guide explains what pushes the price up or down.

What should a small business website include?

A clear homepage that says what you do and where, a page for each service, your contact details on every page, a way to get in touch that works on a phone, and real information about you, such as reviews, photos and who you are. That's the core. Everything else is optional.

How long does it take?

Most small business websites take two to four weeks from kick-off to launch. The biggest factor is how quickly content and feedback come back.

Do I need to write the content?

Not if you don't want to. We can write the pages around what your customers search for, which tends to rank and convert better than copy from a brochure. If you'd rather write it yourself, we'll give you a structure to follow.

Can I update the site myself?

Yes. We show you how to change text, photos and opening hours. Anything bigger, send it over. Every site is on a monthly hosting plan with support time for changes, and larger jobs are quoted up front.

Will it show up on Google?

It's built to. Every site has its pages, titles and structured data set up for local search from day one. Ranking for competitive terms takes ongoing SEO work, which we can also do.

Is a website builder good enough for a small business?

For getting something online quickly, yes. For bringing in work, usually not, because builder templates aren't structured around what your customers search for and tend not to rank. If you've got one and it isn't working, we can rebuild it without losing what you've got.
