LOCAL SEO · DEVON AND THE SOUTH WEST
Get found by the customers already searching for you
Search engine, AI and answer optimisation for small businesses across Devon. Honest work, transparent pricing, and a monthly report you can actually understand.
From £95/month +VAT · rolling agreement · No long-term contracts · Reports in plain English
THE HONEST BIT
If they cannot find you, they will find a competitor
Most people never look past the first page. If your business is not there, the customer goes elsewhere without ever knowing you existed.
Search has changed. People still type into Google, but they also ask ChatGPT for a recommendation, tap a voice assistant, or read an AI summary without clicking through to anyone's website at all.
Being visible now means more than ranking for keywords. It means being the business that search engines, AI tools and answer engines all understand, trust and recommend. That is what we do, and we explain every bit of it in plain English.
HOW WE WORK
Steady, measurable,
and no black boxes
Most agencies sell you a mystery. You pay monthly, things supposedly happen, and you take it on trust. We do it the other way round.
01
Free audit and an honest answer
We look at where you sit today, what your competitors are doing, and what is realistically achievable. If SEO is not the right investment for you right now,
we will tell you that rather than sell you a plan anyway.
02
A one-off setup that gets you ready
Keyword research, competitor analysis, schema, your profile and your tracking, all set up before month one. Around 7 days.
03
Ongoing work, watched and maintained
We keep watch over your visibility and act on it: keywords, key pages, meta data, and more as your plan grows.
04
Reporting you can actually read
A monthly report in plain English showing what was done, how rankings and traffic have moved, and what next month looks like. No jargon, no dashboards you cannot make sense of.
05
Built for SEO, GEO and AEO together
Schema markup, structured content and consistent business information are included as standard on every plan, not held back as a premium extra. Being findable by AI tools is not optional any more.
GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE
For local searches, your profile matters as much as your website
When someone searches for a service near them, Google usually shows a map with three businesses before it shows a single website. Getting into that map pack is often the highest-value thing a local business can do.
A neglected profile costs you work
Wrong hours, no recent photos, unanswered questions and stale posts all signal to Google that a business is less active than its competitors. Profile management is included on both the Current and River plans.
Profile optimisation
Correct primary and secondary categories, complete services list, and a description written for how people actually search.
Regular posts
Updates, offers and news posted consistently. Active profiles are favoured over dormant ones.
Photo management
Fresh images of your work, your team and your premises added on an ongoing basis.
Questions and answers
Seeding the questions customers genuinely ask, and monitoring for anything posted publicly needing a response.
Review responses
Every review answered, positive or otherwise. Google notices, and so does the next person reading them.
Service areas and hours
Accurate coverage, opening times and bank holiday hours. Small details that stop you losing enquiries.
Bing sync and insights
Your details kept consistent on Bing Places too, plus reporting on how people found you and what they did next.

MAKING SENSE OF IT
SEO, GEO, AEO, what
actually matters for your business
The industry loves an acronym. Here is what each means in practice, and why all three now matter for a small business in Devon.
SEO
Search Engine Optimisation
The foundation. Getting your website to rank in traditional search results on Google and Bing through technical health, useful content, local signals and credibility.
"Plumber in Exeter" typed into Google.
GEO
Generative Engine Optimisation
Getting your business named when someone asks an AI tool for a recommendation. These tools synthesise answers from sources they consider trustworthy, so the work is about credibility and consistency.
"Who should I use for a loft conversion in Devon?" asked in ChatGPT.
AEO
Answer Engine Optimisation
Structuring your content so it can be lifted out and served as a direct answer. Featured snippets, voice results and AI summaries all pull from well-structured, clearly written pages.
"How much does bathroom fitting cost?" asked out loud to a phone.
The good news is the three overlap a great deal. Clear, well-structured content with accurate business information and proper technical foundations serves all of them at once. We build for all three as standard rather than treating AI visibility as an expensive extra.
PLAIN ENGLISH
The rest of the jargon,
translated
If an agency uses these without explaining them, ask why.
Local SEO
Optimisation for searches with geographic intent. Driven heavily by your Google Business Profile and local consistency.
Technical SEO
The mechanics. Site speed, mobile usability, crawlability, and making sure search engines can read your site properly.
On-page SEO
Everything on the page itself. Titles, headings, content quality, internal links and how well it answers the search.
GBP Google Business Profile
Your free listing on Google Maps and local search. For many local businesses this drives more enquiries than the website.
NAP Name, Address, Phone
Your core business details. They need to match exactly everywhere they appear, or search engines lose confidence in them.
SERP Search Engine Results Page
The page of results after searching. Increasingly crowded with maps, ads, AI summaries and answer boxes.
Schema structured data
Code that tells search engines exactly what your page is about. Essential for rich results and increasingly for AI tools.
E-E-A-T
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. Google's framework for judging whether content deserves to rank.
Citations
Mentions of your business details on directories and other sites. Consistency across them builds local credibility.
Backlinks
Links from other websites to yours. A vote of confidence, though quality matters far more than quantity.
Core Web Vitals
Google's measures of loading speed, responsiveness and visual stability. Slow sites rank worse and convert worse.
AI Overviews
Google's AI-generated summaries at the top of results. They answer the question directly, often without a click.

GETTING STARTED
How much does SEO cost for a small business in Devon?
Local SEO with MidDevon Digital starts at £95 plus VAT a month for the Source plan, with Current at £195 and River at £295, each adding more monitoring and active work. Every plan begins with a one-off setup of £149 plus VAT, which is waived if you pay quarterly. Everything runs on a rolling agreement with no long-term contract. Across the UK, small business SEO typically runs from around £95 to £1,000 a month depending on how competitive your market is.
Why is my website not showing up on Google?
Usually it is one of four things: Google has not indexed your site properly, you are targeting terms too broad to rank for, your content is too thin for Google to understand what you do, or your local signals are missing so Google does not connect your business to your area. A free audit will tell you which applies to your site, and whether it is a quick fix or a longer piece of work. Missing local signals are the most common cause for Devon trades and service businesses.
How long does SEO take to work?
Most Devon businesses see meaningful movement within three to six months, building from there. Local SEO tends to move faster than national work because competition for local terms is lower: ranking for "plumber in Cullompton" is a far smaller job than ranking for "plumber" nationally. Some things shift within weeks, particularly Google Business Profile improvements. Anyone promising first-page rankings in 30 days is either misleading you or using techniques that risk your site.
Is SEO worth it for a small business?
For most local businesses, yes, but not for all, and we will say so if we think it is not. SEO works well when people actively search for what you do, which is the case for plumbers, builders, accountants and cleaning companies across Devon who have customers typing their service into Google every day. It works less well if your business runs almost entirely on referrals, or if what you sell is so specialist that hardly anyone searches for it.
Can I do SEO myself?
Yes, you can do some of it yourself, and it is worth doing. Keeping your Google Business Profile complete and active, answering reviews, adding photos and writing honest content about what you do are all within reach of most business owners, and they make a real difference to your local visibility. Where it gets harder is the technical side: schema markup, Core Web Vitals, crawl issues, citation consistency, and working out which keywords are actually worth chasing rather than the obvious ones everybody targets. The other consideration is time. Doing it properly is a few hours every month, every month, and for most people that is the bit that quietly stops happening.
SEARCH, AI AND WHERE THINGS ARE HEADING
What are local signals and why do they matter?
Local signals are the pieces of information that tell Google and AI tools where your business operates and how relevant it is to a nearby search: your Google Business Profile, consistent name, address and phone number across the web, local citations, reviews, and content that mentions the areas you serve. Strong, consistent local signals are what get a Devon business into the map pack and named in AI recommendations. Inconsistent or missing ones are the most common reason a local business stays invisible.
How do I get my business into Google's map pack?
The map pack, the three businesses shown on a map above the normal results, is decided mainly on relevance, distance and prominence: how well your profile matches the search, how close you are to the searcher, and how well known and reviewed you are. You cannot change where you are, but accurate categories, a full services list, regular posts, fresh photos and consistent reviews all feed the other two. This is why active Google Business Profile management comes with the Current and River plans.
What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?
SEO gets your website ranking in traditional Google and Bing results. GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation, gets your business named when someone asks an AI tool like ChatGPT or Perplexity for a recommendation. AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation, structures your content so it can be lifted out as a direct answer in featured snippets, voice results and AI summaries. The three overlap heavily, so clear, well-structured content with accurate business details and solid technical foundations serves all of them at once. We build for all three as standard.
How do I get my business to appear in ChatGPT and other AI tools?
Be credible and consistent: structured content, schema markup that explains what you do, business details that match everywhere online, an active Google Business Profile, and genuine reviews. Thin content, inconsistent contact details or missing structured data make you effectively invisible to AI tools. The River plan includes AI results tracking so you can see where you currently appear, and we offer a free AI Visibility Audit if you would rather check before committing.
Is SEO still worth doing now AI answers questions directly?
Yes, though what it involves has widened. AI tools do not invent their answers, they pull from websites, business listings and other sources they consider credible, so a business with well-structured content and consistent details is more likely to be the one they name. The businesses losing out are not the ones doing SEO, they are the ones who never started and are now invisible in traditional search and AI answers at the same time.
WORKING WITH US
What does the monthly SEO work involve?
We keep watch over your visibility and act on it: tracking your keywords, keeping your key pages and meta data in order, and reporting back each month in plain English. Current and River add citations, backlink monitoring and active Google Business Profile management, and River adds AI results tracking, local pack monitoring and finding new backlink opportunities. Bigger one-off jobs, like a new set of location pages, are quoted separately so you only pay for them when you need them.
Do you lock clients into long-term contracts?
No. MidDevon Digital works on a rolling agreement with 30 days' notice to stop. Paying quarterly simply waives your one-off setup fee and bills every three months, it does not tie you in beyond that. Most UK agencies lock clients in for six to twelve months. We never have, because results should be what keeps you with us, not a contract.
Do you guarantee first-page rankings?
No, and be wary of anyone who does. Google uses hundreds of ranking factors and many sit outside any agency's control. What we commit to is consistent, above-board work every month, honest reporting on what has moved and what has not, and a strategy built around your business and your part of Devon. A guaranteed number one spot usually means either a keyword nobody searches for, or techniques that risk your site.
How will I know if the SEO is working?
You get a monthly report in plain English showing what was done, how your rankings have moved, how much traffic came in and where from, and what is planned next. Rankings are only part of it, though: the numbers that matter are enquiries, calls and form submissions, so we track those too, including how many people found you through your Google Business Profile and clicked to call. If the work is not producing anything after a fair run, we will tell you.
