Mobile apps that put your business on your customers' phones

What a mobile app does that a website can't

A mobile app is software a customer installs on their phone from the App Store or Google Play. Unlike a website, it sits on the home screen, it can send a notification, it knows who the customer is without a login every time, and it works when the signal doesn't. For a business built on repeat custom, that's the difference between being remembered and being searched for.

A website is how new customers find you. An app is how existing customers come back. The takeaway that's one tap away gets the Friday order; the salon that sends a "you're due a cut" reminder gets the rebooking; the cafe whose stamp card is on the phone rather than in a drawer gets the tenth coffee. None of that needs a big business. It needs a good app and someone to look after it.

A proper app, not a bookmark

We build native apps for iOS and Android and publish them on the App Store and Google Play. Customers download and install them like any other app. If you also want a version that works in a browser without a download, a progressive web app can sit alongside. These apps are standalone: they don't need a bespoke system behind them, which keeps them affordable. If your business needs an app that talks to its own office system, that's a field service app, built differently.

Built to your spec, in your branding, and yours to run

Your colours, your logo, your menu or your services, your rules. The app is designed around what your customers need to do in it. Once it's live, you run it from a content management system: change the menu, add an offer, post a notice or send a notification from a laptop or your phone, in minutes, without a developer. Content changes like those appear in the app straight away. Changes to how the app is built, such as a new section or a redesign, need a new version sent to the stores, and that's part of what the monthly plan covers.

A direct line to your customers

Every customer who installs the app has opted in to hear from you. A push notification goes straight to their lock screen, free, with no algorithm and no inbox in the way. Offers, reminders, order updates and announcements, sent by you from a simple admin screen in two minutes, to everyone or to a group.

Looked after once it's live

Apple and Google change their systems every year. The app runs on a monthly plan that covers hosting, updates, re-submissions to the stores and support for any issues, so it keeps working while you get on with the business.

Who a mobile app is for

If your customers come back, an app pays for itself. If they don't, we'll tell you to spend the money on the website instead.

Takeaways, restaurants, cafes and pubs

Orders straight from the phone with no marketplace taking a cut, a loyalty scheme built in, and a notification when the Friday special is on.

Salons, barbers, clinics and trainers

Customers book from the app, pay a deposit, get reminded and rebook with one tap. Fewer no-shows, fewer phone calls, a diary that fills itself.

Shops and businesses with regulars

A digital loyalty card, members' prices, early access to new stock, and a way to reach your best customers that isn't a crowded inbox.

Clubs, schools, churches and community groups

News, fixtures, events, notices and payments for subs and tickets, in one place that members check. Push notifications replace the WhatsApp group nobody can find anything in.

What we build

Four kinds of app cover most of what small businesses and groups ask for. Many apps are two of these together: ordering with loyalty, booking with rewards.

Food ordering and takeaway apps

Your menu, your prices, your customers, with no marketplace taking a cut of every order. Ordering, payment, collection or delivery slots and loyalty in one app.

Booking and appointment apps

Salons, barbers, clinics, trainers and anyone who works by appointment. Customers book, pay a deposit and get reminded from the app, and your diary stays yours.

Loyalty and rewards apps

A digital stamp card that lives on the phone, not in a wallet. Points, rewards, offers and push notifications that bring people back, with you seeing who your regulars are.

Community and club apps

Clubs, schools, churches, village halls and groups. News, events, notices, a members' area and payments for subs and tickets, with push notifications that people actually read.

What your app can do

Pick what the business needs. Everything here has been built before, and anything else can usually be added.

  • Push notifications to everyone or a group
  • Food and product ordering with checkout
  • Appointment and table booking
  • Card payments, Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Digital loyalty cards, points and rewards
  • Customer accounts and order history
  • News, events and announcements you update yourself
  • Members-only areas and pricing
  • Photos, menus, galleries and video
  • A content management system you log into, so you make day-to-day changes yourself
  • Works offline for the parts that should
  • Links out to your website, booking page or online shop where that's simpler than rebuilding them

Your marketing, in their pocket. A push notification reaches every customer who installed the app, for free, the moment you send it.

Email gets buried, social posts get shown to a fraction of your followers, and text messages cost per send. A notification from your own app goes straight to the lock screen of everyone who chose to install it, with nothing in between. Tonight's special, a quiet-afternoon offer, "you're due a cut", "your order is ready", the fixture change: you type it into the admin screen, pick everyone or a group, and it's on their phones in seconds. That direct line to customers who have already said yes to you is the single biggest reason to have an app rather than a website.

Recent project

Elite Cleaning: an office system built to replace software that never fitted

A Devon commercial cleaning company with 80 to 100 staff across more than 100 client sites. The office side of the portal gives managers a live view of cover, attendance and issues across every site, with timesheets flowing from the staff sign-in rather than being collected by hand. Peter built the first version while running the company, so it was designed by someone who had to use it.

Two ways to build it, one way to look after it

Every app is quoted as a one-off build, then runs on a monthly plan that covers hosting, the content management system and keeping the app working as iOS and Android change. Scoping and quoting are free, and the quote is fixed in writing.

Standard

A polished, working app on our proven framework

One-off quote to design and build

  • iOS app for iPhone and iPad
  • Android app for phones and tablets
  • Your branding, colours and content
  • Choice of core features: ordering, booking, loyalty, news, notifications
  • Push notifications you send yourself
  • App Store and Google Play submission

Best for

A business that wants a proper app doing one or two things well, quickly

Every app runs on a monthly support plan

  • Hosting and backups for the app and its content
  • iOS and Android updates as the systems change
  • Store re-submissions when Apple or Google require them
  • Security patches and bug fixes
  • Support for any issues
  • Rolling monthly, 30 days' notice

Final price and build time depend on the feature set, size and scope of your app, so we quote each one rather than publishing a figure. New features after launch are scoped and quoted separately; the support plan stays the same price however the app grows.

Published under your name, or ours

Both put a real app on the App Store and Google Play. The difference is who holds the developer accounts.

Under your business name

  • The app shows your business as the publisher
  • Developer accounts in your name, which you own
  • Stronger brand presence on the stores
  • Apple charges an annual developer fee; Google a one-off

Best for established businesses that want full ownership and their own name on the store.

Under MidDevon Digital

  • The app shows your business as the publisher
  • Developer accounts in your name, which you own
  • Stronger brand presence on the stores
  • Apple charges an annual developer fee; Google a one-off

Best for businesses that want a working app without the admin. The app is still your business's, and it can be moved to your own accounts later.

How an app gets built

Four stages, a fixed price, and a working version on your own phone well before launch.

Step 1

Discovery

A conversation about your customers, what they'd use the app for, and what you need to see on your side. Your spec is what the app is designed around. At your place or on Zoom.

Step 2

Design and fixed quote

Every screen designed in your branding before any code is written, with a written scope, a fixed price and a realistic timeline.

Step 3

Build and test

iOS and Android built together, with a test version on your phone as each part is ready. You and your team try it on real devices before it goes near the stores.

Step 4

Launch and look after

We handle the App Store and Google Play submissions and go live. Then hosting, the content management system, updates, re-submissions and support run on a monthly plan, with new features quoted as you want them.

Apps need looking after. Every year, iOS and Android change, and an app that isn't updated stops working.

Buttons break, crashes start, the store pulls the listing, and customers walk away. Every app we build runs on a monthly support plan that covers hosting, backups, security updates, store re-submissions when Apple or Google require them, and support for any issues. Rolling monthly, 30 days' notice. New features are scoped and quoted separately, so the plan stays the same price however the app grows.

We have always found Peter to be responsive to our requirements, and this has delivered an efficient solution to the daily functions of our growing business. We believe that the process we undertook with Peter has resulted in a far superior solution to purchasing an off-the-shelf system.

Peter at MidDevon Digital has been absolutely amazing. His patience with my lack of technology is sound and I love the work he has done on our website. I would have no hesitation recommending him.

How much does it cost to make an app in the UK?

It depends on what the app does, how many sections and features it has, and whether it needs to take payments. A straightforward loyalty or information app is at the lower end; an ordering app with payments, delivery slots and orders passed into a till is at the upper end. You get a fixed quote in writing after a free discovery call, and we scope to the budget a small business actually has.

Does my business need an app, or is a website enough?

A website is for being found. An app is for the customers you already have: it sits on their home screen, it can send a notification, it remembers who they are and it works offline. If your business depends on repeat custom, a takeaway, a salon, a cafe, a club, an app earns its keep. If most of your customers are new each time, put the money into the website and SEO instead, and we'll say so.

Will it be a real app on the App Store and Google Play?

Yes. We build native apps for iOS and Android and publish them to the App Store and Google Play, so customers download and install them like any other app. If you also want a version that runs in a browser without a download, we can add a progressive web app alongside.

Can the app be published under my business name?

Yes. The app can appear on the stores under your business name, using Apple and Google developer accounts in your name, which you own. If you'd rather skip the admin and the annual Apple fee, we can publish it under ours instead. Either way the app is yours.

How long does an app take to build?

It depends on the spec, the number of screens and features, how quickly your content and branding come back, and our workload at the time, so the timeline is agreed in your quote rather than quoted as a standard figure. Apple's review adds a few days at the end that nobody controls. We build in stages, so you'll be testing a working version on your own phone well before launch.

Can it take payments?

Yes, through Stripe, PayPal or your existing card provider, with Apple Pay and Google Pay on the phone. The money goes to your account. There is no platform fee from us on anything sold through the app; your payment provider's processing fee applies as it would anywhere.

Can it send push notifications?

Yes, and it's the main reason to have an app rather than a website. A push notification goes to the lock screen of every customer who installed the app, free, the moment you send it, with no algorithm deciding who sees it and no inbox for it to get lost in. An offer, a reminder, a "your order is ready", a club announcement. You send them yourself from a simple admin screen, to everyone or to a group, and you can schedule them in advance.

What happens after the app is live?

Apple and Google update their systems every year, and an app that isn't kept up stops working. The app runs on a monthly support plan that covers hosting, the content management system you use to update it, backups, security updates, store re-submissions when they're needed and support for any issues. Rolling monthly, 30 days' notice. Most changes you make yourself, to content, menus, prices, offers and notices, go live in the app immediately without a new version. Changes to the app itself, such as a new section, a new feature or a change to the design, need a new version published to the App Store and Google Play, which we handle; new features are scoped and quoted separately, and the republishing is covered by the plan.

Do I own the app, and what is it built on?

The app, its branding, its content and its customer data belong to your business, and the developer accounts can be in your name. The app runs on an established app platform rather than code written from scratch, which is what keeps the build cost and the monthly plan where a small business can afford them. If you ever need something the platform can't do, that's a bespoke build, and we do those too.

Want your business on your customers' phones?

Tell us who your customers are and what they'd use the app for, and we'll tell you honestly whether an app is worth it, and what it would cost.
